The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Bailey C. Naber (MCSN: 372168), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Headquarters and Service Battery, Third Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 7 July 1944. Setting up his machine gun in the face of intense hostile fire during a fierce enemy attack on his battery’s position, Private First Class Naber delivered effective fire until his gun ceased to function. Leaving his position, he borrowed a machine gun from an adjacent unit and set it up in an exposed position from which he could cover the evacuation of the wounded and the withdrawal of isolated elements. When reinforcements arrived, he advanced with them, directing their movements and pointing out targets. His great personal valor, deep concern for his comrades and complete disregard for his own safety reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Naber and the United States Naval Service.
