The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Philip J. Mylod (MCSN: 0-13152), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Executive Officer of Company I, Third Battalion, Twenty-ninth Marines, SIXTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 16 April 1945. When his company was engaged in an attack against a heavily fortified enemy position on Mount Yaetake, Captain Mylod unhesitatingly proceeded up and down the hillside during the fierce fire fight to encourage his men and direct their fire and their advance. By his initiative and courage under enemy fire, he led his men in destroying hostile guns and in eliminating seventy-five Japanese soldiers, thus contributing materially to the company’s success in seizing the final objective on the Motobu Peninsula. His leadership and fighting spirit throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
