The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Wallace W. Myers (MCSN: 841057), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company E, Second Battalion, Twenty-third Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 2 July 1944. With two members of his platoon severely wounded and lying in an open fire-swept area one hundred yards in advance of his position, Private First Class Myers fearlessly risked his life to attempt a rescue and, boldly advancing through the enemy’s withering small-arms fire, pulled both Marines to a nearby defiladed position. Ascertaining that one of the men had succumbed to his wounds, he placed the other on his back and crawled out of the enemy line of fire to obtain medical attention for him. By his daring initiative, great personal valor and grave concern for the safety of others at great risk to his life, Private First Class Myers saved the life of a man who otherwise might have perished and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
