The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Kent L. Myers (MCSN: 511141), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Second Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during operations against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas Group, on 20 June 1944. When an explosion occurred in an ammunition dump and caused serious fires, Private First Class Myers courageously entered the dump which contained dynamite, artillery and mortar ammunition and, with heroic determination in the face of imminent peril, valiantly exerted every effort to isolate the fire until he was mortally wounded in a second explosion. Private First Class Myers’ fearless and self-sacrificing conduct on this occasion was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
