The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Nicholas J. Mussro (MCSN: 429557), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company A, First Battalion, Twenty-first Marines (Reinforced), THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, on the night of 22 July 1944. When the enemy penetrated the left flank of his company’s lines during a counterattack and all means of communication with his company command post had been severed, Corporal Mussro braved intense enemy mortar and rifle fire to lay new wire to all platoons and the Battalion Command Post. By enabling his Commanding Officer to report the situation and obtain reserves, he contributed directly to the successful repulse of the counterattack. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
