The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class George R. Murdock (MCSN: 456919), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Rifle Grenadier serving with the First Battalion, Twenty-Ninth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Marianas Group, on 22 June 1944. Wounded by fire from a well-emplaced enemy machine gun as he advanced as a scout to find a suitable route of advance to his company’s objective, Private First Class Murdock dispatched another scout to inform the commander of this serious threat to his company. Heroically charging the hostile machine gun with rifle grenades, he neutralized the position and thereby enabled a squad of his platoon to complete its destruction before he was mortally wounded. Private First Class Murdock’s valiant fighting spirit and unyielding devotion to duty under extremely hazardous conditions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
