The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John G. Munn (MCSN: 827049), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Tractor Operator of Headquarters and Service Company, Fifth Engineer Battalion, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from 19 February to 26 March 1945. Operating his tractor well in advance of the front lines under constant enemy fire of all types, Private First Class Munn rendered invaluable service throughout the operation in constructing tank roads in the northern sector of the island to aid the advance of the infantry. On 18 and 19 March, when infantry troops were pinned down by fire from enemy strongholds in a draw near Kitano Point which could not be penetrated by tanks because of the difficult terrain, he volunteered ton construct a road to break the deadlock and, although his tractor was hit many times by enemy fire, skillfully completed his task and enabled tanks to advance and destroy hostile strongholds with fire and flames. His courage and determination under fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
