The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Paul L. Mullins (MCSN: 854090), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Fourth Marines, Reinforced, First Provisional Marine Brigade, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, 21 July 1944. Throughout the assault operations following the initial landing, Private First Class Mullins manned his machine gun skillfully and with aggressive determination and, although mortally wounded while fighting off a savage Japanese attack on the right flank of his platoon during the latter part of the day’s action, tenaciously continued firing his weapon until he succumbed to his wounds. Private First Class Mullins’ inspiring conduct, indomitable fighting spirit and self-sacrificing devotion to duty under extremely perilous conditions contributed materially to the success of the operations and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
