The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Robert J. Mullaney (MCSN: 401855), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Fourth Marines, Reinforced, First Provisional Marine Brigade, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Guam, Mariana Islands, on 27 July 1944. Seriously wounded when his platoon was pinned down by heavy enemy fire, Private First Class Mullaney fearlessly remained in action. Determined to use his rifle to the best advantage to break the Japanese strong points, he spotted a hostile machine-gun nest and courageously assisted in its destruction, but was fatally wounded during the fierce action. By his daring aggressiveness and valiant fighting spirit, maintained at great personal risk, Private First Class Mullaney contributed materially to the success of our forces in this area, and his unwavering devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
