The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Junior L. Mulcahy (MCSN: 307412), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Headquarters Company, Headquarters and Service Battalion, Fifth Amphibious Corps, Fleet Marine Force, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 26 June 1944. As a member of a party of four studying Japanese fortifications, Sergeant Mulcahy participated in an encounter with the enemy and, although seriously wounded himself, heroically volunteered to go for help for a severely wounded officer. Partially blinded and suffering from shock, he made this offer to permit the able-bodied members of his party to remain with the officer, who could not be moved due to the expected renewal of enemy action. His inspiring courage, exceptional fortitude and unselfish devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Sergeant Mulcahy and the United States Naval Service.
