The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Joseph J. Mulcahy (MCSN: 369073), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while a member of the Weapons Company, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands on 3 November 1942. Serving as a member of a gun crew in direct support of an attack against hostile troops, Corporal Mulcahy, when the other two members of the gun crew became casualties, bravely stood by the gun and maintained effective fire until he drove the Japanese back to a point where they could be annihilated by our infantry. His courageous devotion to duty, maintained at great risk in the face of grave danger, was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
