Action Date:
The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Edward W. Mulcahy (MCSN: 0-29312), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Rifle Platoon Leader of Company B, First Battalion, Twenty-first Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, 25 and 26 July 1944. Although he and the remaining seven men of his platoon were isolated from the rest of his company following a coordinated Japanese night attack, Second Lieutenant Mulcahy held the position throughout the night against repeated enemy attacks, refusing to be evacuated for wounds in the face and hip inflicted by a hostile hand grenade. By holding his position at all cost until a counterattack had restored the line, he contributed greatly to breaking the force of the Japanese attack which threatened the entire beachhead. His courageous actions and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
