The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Calvin Ross Mosher (MCSN: 365833), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu Island, Palau Group, 18 September 1944. Forced to retire with his squad from an untenable position along a coral ridge under intense hostile mortar concentrations and machine-gun fire, Corporal Mosher, accompanied by another squad member, crawled forward to a hazardous position near the crest where he was able to cover the withdrawal of the remainder of his squad by bringing effective automatic rifle fire to bear upon the enemy. Although discovered and heavily fired upon by the hostile forces, Corporal Mosher maintained a continuous stream of fire against enemy installations shielding the squad’s withdrawal over a torturous, broken trail until he was killed. By his heroic, selfless action, Corporal Mosher contributed essentially to the success of the platoon’s mission, and his unfaltering devotion to duty and indomitable courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
