The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal George C. Morris (MCSN: 354683), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Amphibian Tractor Battalion, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on enemy-held Peleliu, Palau Islands, 15 September 1944. Acting as Crew Chief of an amphibian tractor, Corporal Morris volunteered to carry ammunition two hundred yards ahead of the front lines to a tank which was trapped and out of ammunition. Although the tank and surrounding area were under fierce hostile mortar and machine-gun fire at the time, he courageously exposed himself by standing on top of his tractor and passing ammunition through the rear port of the tank to the loader. When one track of his vehicle was broken by enemy fire, he repaired it under a constant enemy barrage and succeeded in taking it back into our own lines. His unwavering courage and devotion to duty on this extremely hazardous mission were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
