The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Henry H. Morgan (MCSN: 0-17709), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Executive Officer of Company A, Fifth Tank Battalion, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 16 March 1945. Having had three tanks knocked out from under him, First Lieutenant Morgan assumed command of a platoon of tanks and, finding the terrain suitable for only one vehicle, courageously took his own tank into the midst of an enemy pocket. Although subjected on three different occasions to attack by individual enemy infantrymen carrying demolition charges, he delivered heavy fire on hostile personnel and installations in the area and succeeded in destroying three pillboxes and four camouflaged machine-gun positions which had been causing our troops heavy casualties. When his driver encountered difficulty in backing out of the position First Lieutenant Morgan dismounted from the vehicle despite enemy sniper fire and personally guided his driver out of the narrow defile by hand and arm signals. His aggressive fighting spirit and unwavering devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
