The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class William G. Moore (MCSN: 499452), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, 27 September 1944. When his machine-gun squad, urgently in need of ammunition, was subjected to intense, persistent enemy small-arms fire during the vital attack against the northernmost part of the island, Private First Class Moore unhesitatingly exposed himself to the fierce hostile opposition to bring ammunition to his gun and, although seriously wounded while carrying out his hazardous mission, tenaciously continued his efforts, crawling and dragging himself the remaining distance to the gun position. Subsequently making a second attempt to return for more ammunition, he was killed by enemy fire. Private First Class Moore’s splendid initiative and indomitable courage under extremely perilous conditions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
