The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant John L. Moore (MCSN: 0-39210), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader of Company I, Third Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 5 May 1945. Observing a cave from which the enemy was delivering heavy machine-gun and rifle fire on his company, Second Lieutenant Moore unhesitatingly made his way forward with another man and, courageously entering the cave, engaged two of the enemy in furious hand-to-hand combat, bayoneting one and shooting the other. By his heroic action, he enabled his company to continue their advance, and his bravery and initiative were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
