The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Floyd E. Moore (MCSN: 0-9260), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to a platoon of Company C, Third Amphibian Tractor Battalion, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, 21 July 1944. When his amphibian tractor was put out of action by a mortar burst while carrying assault troops ashore during the initial landing on Guam, First Lieutenant Moore waded ashore and, in the face of heavy mortar and small-arms fire, coolly directed the LVT’s of the platoon from the shore line. On numerous occasions during the landings, when troops in his sector were pinned down or demoralized by hostile fire, he proceeded about the beach, directing the evacuation of wounded and exhorting others to join him in the unloading of tractors and the general restoration of the beach to intense activity. By his courage and initiative, First Lieutenant Moore saved many lives and contributed materially to the success of LVT operations on the beach. His inspiring leadership throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
