The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Chester E. Moore (MCSN: 837272), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company C, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 22 May 1945. When his platoon was held up by heavy enemy small-arms fire several hundred yards in front of the main body, Private First Class Moore volunteered to establish and maintain telephone communications with the company. After several comrades, who were assisting him in this hazardous mission, were severely wounded, he commandeered an amphibious tractor and guided it back to the advanced position in the face of mounting enemy fire and assisted in evacuating the wounded. Undeterred by the stiff resistance of the Japanese, he led and directed tanks to positions from which they were able to annihilate the enemy. His outstanding fighting spirit and courageous devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
