The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Ray McKinley Montgomery (MCSN: 1093500), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a member of Headquarters and Service Company, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 3 September 1951. Volunteering to repair the break in a severed communications line to an outlying platoon during a hostile night attack, Corporal Montgomery left his position of relative safety and, braving a barrage of intense enemy fire, proceeded through the darkness to the aid of the stranded platoon. Mortally wounded while engaged in this heroic act, Corporal Montgomery served as an inspiration to all his comrades. His daring initiative and outstanding courage were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
