The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Arthur J. Monte (MCSN: 363494), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving with the Second Marine Raider Battalion during operations against enemy Japanese forces at Asamana, Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on 11 November 1942. When overwhelming enemy fire made our position untenable, Private Monte as assistant machine gunner courageously remained with his gun to cover his company’s retirement. With utter disregard for his own personal safety, he stayed by his post until his gunner was killed and he himself gravely wounded. His indomitable fighting spirit and heroic devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
