The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Edward R. Moffett (MCSN: 0-11780), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to the Sixth Marines, Reinforced, in action against enemy Japanese forces at Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands, on January 23, 1943. While commanding a weapons platoon, First Lieutenant Moffett was approximately thirty yards from the area where several marines fell under the fire of a concealed enemy machine gun. After one corpsman was killed while attempting to administer first aid, First Lieutenant Moffett unhesitatingly left his covered position and twice entered the area, each time carrying a man to safety. His gallant disregard of his own safety and heroic conduct under fire were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
