The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Grady B. Mize (MCSN: 293579), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company M, Third Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, on 22 November 1943. Skilled and aggressive in the performance of duty, Corporal Mize fearlessly advanced ahead of his platoon in a valiant effort to wipe out a hostile machine gun retarding the advance of our troops and, pressing home a determined attack, completely destroyed the Japanese strong point. By his daring initiative, indomitable fighting spirit and cool courage in the face of grave peril, Corporal Mize contributed materially to the success of our sustained drive against the enemy in this vital area and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
