The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant Myron K. Minnick (MCSN: 0-14067), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to the Third Battalion, Twenty-Fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during the occupation of enemy Japanese-held Saipan Island in the Marianas, on 23 June 1944. Landing with his platoon under a continuous hail of shattering mortar fire on D-Day, First Lieutenant Minnick directed the operations of his unit with resolute skill and courage throughout the entire Saipan campaign. When his group was temporarily held up and one of his men seriously wounded by merciless Japanese machine-gun fire on 23 June, he unhesitatingly proceeded into the zone of fire and administered medical aid to the suffering Marine despite the deadly volleys from enemy emplacements. Then, with the subsequent arrival of friendly tanks, he advanced with one of the armored vehicles and, directing the full force of the tank’s powerful fire against the strategically placed enemy gun, succeeded in silencing the devastating weapon. A forceful leader, First Lieutenant Minnick, by his determined aggressiveness, resolute initiative and great personal valor in the face of fanatic opposition, contributed essentially to the conquest of this vital Japanese stronghold, and his unwavering devotion to duty during a prolonged period of bitter hostilities reflects the highest credit upon First Lieutenant Minnick, his gallant men and the United States Naval Service.
