The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Robert C. Miller (MCSN: 0-25157), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to Company A, First Battalion, Twenty-sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 22 February 1945. Assuming command of a rifle company during a heavy enemy counterattack, which broke through our lines, First Lieutenant Miller re-formed his company’s lines in the face of intense hostile fire and, encouraging his men in determined and aggressive action, succeeded in repulsing the attacking forces in his sector. His inspiring leadership, indomitable fighting spirit and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
