The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class John T. Miller (MCSN: 414143), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company L, Third Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 15 June 1944. With his own weapon knocked out of his hand during an attack by his company against strongly fortified hostile positions, Private First Class Miller gallantly fought on, despite serious wounds received during the fierce action, and closing with one of the enemy in hand-to-hand combat, killed him, seized his weapon and rejoined his platoon to continue the attack. Subsequently ordered to evacuate the area for treatment, Private First Class Miller, by his daring initiative, outstanding fortitude and unrelenting devotion to duty in the face of extreme danger, contributed materially to the success of the engagement and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
