The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Edward J. Miller (MCSN: 0-25156), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader of Company B, First Battalion, Twenty-sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 22 February 1945. Although twice wounded severely enough to warrant evacuation, First Lieutenant Miller refused to leave his platoon. During a relentless enemy counterattack which threatened to break through his weakened defense lines, he quickly reorganized his platoon and successfully repulsed the enemy. By repeatedly exposing himself to enemy fire, he insured the security of his platoon’s flanks and prevented any gaps in his unit which would jeopardize his company. Continuing his valiant service until his evacuation was ordered by his Commanding Officer, First Lieutenant Miller served as an inspiration to his men, and his gallant devotion to duty throughout was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
