The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Robert C. Milan (MCSN: 404716), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Tank gunner serving with the Second Tank Battalion, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, from 15 to 30 June 1944. Courageous and aggressive in the face of terrific fire from enemy Japanese forces, Corporal Milan rendered invaluable service during the invasion of this strategically important hostile stronghold, and his outstanding technical skill and unwavering devotion to duty were instrumental in inflicting substantial damage on enemy installations and numerous casualties to Japanese forces. While proceeding on foot to cover the evacuation of a wounded Marine on 30 June, he was mortally wounded by enemy fire. His daring initiative and dauntless spirit reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Milan and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
