The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Roy E. Mick (MCSN: 272296), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands Area, 23 – 24 October 1942. When the enemy launched a night tank attack supported by heavy machine-gun and mortar fire, Sergeant Mick, who was in charge of one half-track tank destroyer crew, directed the attack of his gun against three hostile tanks in front of his position and one that was operating in the rear of his lines. Despite the exceedingly unfavorable terrain and dense jungle growth which restricted the maneuverability of the half-track, Sergeant Mick conducted the action with keen initiative and outstanding professional skill, thereby contributing materially to the complete destruction of all the enemy tanks in that engagement. His dauntless courage and unfailing devotion to duty under adverse conditions were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
