The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Raymond Edward Metz (MCSN: 167029), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Fire Team Leader in a Platoon of Company G, Second Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, 22 July 1944. Occupying positions on the high ground of the Chonito Cliff area of Asan-Adelup beachhead when a heavy enemy mortar barrage seriously wounded seven men and killed one, Corporal Metz volunteered to go back and direct stretcher-bearers from the Battalion Aid Station to the wounded, courageously traversing exposed ground swept by hostile machine-gun and sniper fire to accomplish his mission. Successful in leading the stretcher-bearers back to the combat zone, he then assisted in carrying out casualties and, although seriously wounded in the chest and back during the fifth trip to the Battalion Aid Station, refused evacuation for himself until those wounded earlier had been cared for. His courageous initiative, loyalty to his comrades and inspiring devotion to duty throughout this action reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Metz and the United States Naval Service.
