The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Francis J. Mercurio (MCSN: 889715), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on the Island of Peleliu in the Palau Group, on 25 September 1944. Dispatched with his fire team to protect one of three tanks supporting our assault operations during a powerful attack against a strongly fortified hill position on the northern tip of the island, Private First Class Mercurio maintained a vigilant watch. When his vehicle, the last of the three tanks to attempt a return trip to the rear for additional ammunition, was caught in an enemy tank trap, he unhesitatingly left the comparative safety of his tank’s cover and fearlessly took station in a strategic firing position approximately twenty yards in front of his vehicle. Opening fire on the Japanese who were preparing to launch deadly Bangalore torpedoes from their caves, he fought his weapon fiercely, pouring death and destruction on the cave’s defenders in a relentless stream of devastating fire, steadfastly continuing his valiant efforts and annihilating several of the enemy before he fell, mortally wounded. By his bold initiative, indomitable fighting spirit and cool decision in the face of fanatic opposition, Private First Class Mercurio contributed essentially to the success of our operations on this vital Japanese stronghold and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
