The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Regilio A. Mercati (MCSN: 307632), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company G, Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Fonte Hill, Guam, Mariana Islands, 25 July 1944. Posted as temporary guard over three wounded Marines, Sergeant Mercati steadfastly remained at his post when stretcher-bearers failed to arrive by twilight and, throughout the night, was constantly subjected to hostile rifle and machine-gun fire and enemy observation. Shortly before midnight, two Japanese infiltrated to within a few yards of his position and, acting quickly and skillfully, he killed them when they were within point-blank range. Before dawn the next morning, three more Japanese attempted to close in on him and they too were killed at point-blank range. During this encounter, he was severely wounded by a burst of enemy fire, but he heroically stayed with the wounded Marines until dawn when stretcher-bearers finally arrived to evacuate them. His resourceful initiative, courageous action and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
