The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Second Lieutenant Phillip E. Mendenhall (MCSN: 0-29304), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Rifle Platoon Leader attached to the First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu Island, Palau Group, 17 September 1944. When heavy machine-gun and sniper fire directed towards the front of his platoon from commanding enemy terrain made conditions extremely hazardous, Second Lieutenant Mendenhall, fully aware of his own peril and disregarding his personal safety, tirelessly and courageously moved from position to position, caring for wounded Marines and adjusting his lines to facilitate control. Mortally wounded in carrying out his vital tasks, Second Lieutenant Mendenhall had contributed essentially to the success of platoon operations, and his outstanding combat skill, brave determination and unwavering devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
