The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Thomas B. McQuarrie, Jr. (MCSN: 887110), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Ammunition Carrier of Company C, First Battalion, Twenty-seventh Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, on 9 March 1945. Voluntarily entering an area from which his company had been forced to withdraw, Private McQuarrie advanced to evacuate two seriously wounded men and, moving forward to the position where the first man lay, picked him up and carried him to safety. Unhesitatingly returning to the same area which was still under continual heavy mortar, machine-gun and sniper fire, he and another comrade moved the second man to a safe position, thereby contributing materially to saving the lives of both these Marines. His initiative, courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
