The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Robert A. McMullen (MCSN: 0-30452), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Company Commander of Company I, Third Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division (Reinforced), in action against enemy aggressor forces in Korea on 26 September 1950. Assigned the mission of assaulting a ridge line in front of the Battalion area, Captain Mullen repeatedly exposed himself to heavy enemy fire while moving among his men, directing their fire and lending assistance and encouragement. By his courageous actions, he contributed materially to the successful completion of the company’s assigned mission. Later, while reorganizing the units of his company to continue the attack, he was seriously wounded and had to be evacuated. His fortitude, initiative and outstanding leadership reflect the highest credit upon Captain McMullen and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
