The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Malvin McLinden (MCSN: 348999), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a bulldozer operator while serving with the FIRST Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, New Britain, December 26-30, 1943. Skillfully operating his machine under the most hazardous conditions immediately after landing on the beach, Private First Class McLinden effectively cleared the roads for the advance of supply vehicles and tanks, in one instance driving through a constant hail of hostile sniper fire to accomplish his mission. Closely following our assault troops and working without rest throughout four consecutive days of uninterrupted operations, he greatly facilitated the forward movement of supplies and contributed materially to the successful operation of our forces in this strategic area. Private First Class McLinden’s courageous initiative, daring aggressiveness and unwavering devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
