The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Arthur L. McGilvray, Jr. (MCSN: 0-18158), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader of Headquarters Company, First Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 6 March 1945. When a group of his men were pinned down by enemy fire while attempting to assault an enemy blockhouse, First Lieutenant McGilvray went forward to lead the group and, personally accounting for two of the Japanese, placed the charge on the blockhouse and destroyed the hostile position despite the intense enemy fire, thereby enabling the rifle company in the area to advance and seize the high ground protected by the blockhouse. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon First Lieutenant McGilvray and the United States Naval Service.
