The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Martin J. McEvilly, Jr. (MCSN: 536087), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Combat Cameraman of the Corps Photographic Section, Third Amphibious Corps, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, 21 July 1944. Landing with the assault wave, Corporal McEvilly carried out his important duties heroically and with expert technical skill in the face of intense, persistent enemy fire, photographing the vital action around him for combat intelligence and public relations purposes until he sustained severe wounds that later proved fatal. Placed in a comparatively comfortable position after instructing the hospital corpsman to treat other casualties first, he waited patiently and cheerfully for medical assistance, and, although the supply of plasma was exhausted before an injection could be administered, steadfastly maintained his courage and was an inspiring example to his wounded comrades. Corporal McEvilly’s exceptional fortitude and unselfish conduct were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life in the valiant performance of his duty.
