The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Major Charles W. McCoy (MCSN: 0-5835), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the Second Tank Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, from 20-24 November 1943. With the remainder of his Battalion Staff either killed or wounded during the fierce hostilities on D-Day, Major McCoy immediately assumed command of all tank units ashore and, repeatedly reorganizing remnants of his Battalion despite the enemy’s unceasing opposition, skillfully directed brilliantly executed attacks against heavily fortified hostile strong-points, emplacements and pillboxes until the atoll was secure. His fearless and determined leadership, daring aggressiveness and unwavering devotion to duty throughout the bitter campaign were essential factors in the success of our forces in capturing this vital hostile stronghold and reflect the highest credit upon Major McCoy, his intrepid men and the United States Naval Service.
