The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Daniel R. McCarthy, Jr. (MCSN: 510557), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Machine Gun Squad Leader of Company H, Third Battalion, Twenty-eighth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 28 February 1945. While the enemy, entrenched in caves at the base of Mount Suribachi, was inflicting heavy casualties on his company, Corporal McCarthy voluntarily went forward of the front line and, setting up his machine gun in an open position directly in front of the caves, delivered extremely accurate fire into the hostile strong points. Although the Japanese made several attempts to infiltrate the lines and destroy the weapon during the night, he remained at his gun and succeeded in killing at least twenty of the enemy while repulsing their attacks. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
