The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Earl Jurome McBride (MCSN: 315398), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the SECOND Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, November 20, 1943. Seriously wounded in the mouth and shoulder while disembarking from his grounded landing craft, Private First Class McBride courageously advanced the five hundred yards to the beach under severe enemy rifle and mortar fire, carrying a heavy machinegun tripod and struggling on until he had successfully completed his assigned task. As a result of his fortitude and valiant action despite wounds that later proved fatal, it was possible to put into action a machine gun vitally needed in the assault operations. Private McBride’s loyal devotion to duty in the face of grave peril was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
