The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Charles K. P. McArdle (MCSN: 353278), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company F, Second Battalion, Twenty-second Marines (Reinforced), First Provisional Marine Brigade, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Engebi Island, Eniwetok Atoll, Marshall Islands, 18 February 1944. Crossing two hundred yards of open terrain under heavy hostile fire, Private First Class McArdle exposed himself to enemy snipers while instructing the crew of medium tanks to provide support for his unit in the adjacent area. On another occasion, he advanced in the face of fire from a Japanese sniper hidden in an immobilized tank and killed the sniper with a hand grenade. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
