    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Carlo C. Mastrototaro (MCSN: 272774), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Fire Group Leader of Company B, First Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 8 July 1944. When a number of Japanese armed with rifles and automatic weapons attacked his platoon from the rear, Private First Class Mastrototaro, on his initiative, quickly organized and led a patrol in search of the enemy. By his skill and aggressive leadership, he directed the patrol in locating and annihilating five of the enemy and in successfully driving off the remainder. His initiative, indomitable fighting spirit and courageous devotion to duty reflect the highest credit on Private First Class Mastrototaro and the United States Naval Service.
