The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Ronald A. Mastrangelo (MCSN: 461406), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as an Ambulance Driver with C Medical Company, Fourth Medical Battalion, FOURTH Marine Division, in operations against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan and Tinian, Mariana Islands, from 15 June to 1 August 1944. On D-Day plus one, Corporal Mastrangelo worked heroically and tirelessly to evacuate patients to the beach and willingly exposed himself to enemy fire to administer first aid to the wounded. In a later engagement, he and a hospital corpsman volunteered to evacuate a patient from the field, knowing the road was under machine-gun fire and that the chances of getting through were slim. Pinned down for two hours, he carefully chose an opportunity to evacuate the patient and succeeded without injury to himself or his corpsman. Assigned to evacuate patients over a bomb-pitted and constantly shelled road, he was instrumental, through his perseverance and zeal, in saving the lives of many wounded men. His courage under fire, unselfish regard for his own safety and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
