The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Kenneth R. Mason (MCSN: 627698), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company F, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during the assault on enemy Japanese forces entrenched on Dakeshi Ridge, Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, 11 May 1945. Finding that the remainder of his squad had been killed or wounded by vicious cross fire from enemy machine guns, Private Mason staunchly held his position and delivered covering fire which facilitated the treatment and evacuation of casualties. Although seriously wounded, he resolutely continued his fire until help arrived and removed the last of the casualties to safety. His loyalty, courageous concern for his comrades, and indomitable devotion to duty upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
