The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Stanley A. Martson (MCSN: 407212), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Radio Operator of Headquarters Company, Third Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, from 15 June to 9 July 1944. Wounded by a grenade as he landed with the assault echelon, Private First Class Martson refused evacuation and, immediately establishing communication, remained with the company throughout the day until a replacement relieved him. Released from the hospital ship at his own request two days later, he returned to his company where he again rendered valiant service and, although wounded again on 2 July, continued over difficult terrain until ordered by his Commanding Officer to leave his post. His courage, determination and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Martson and the United States Naval Service.
