The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star (Army Award) to Private First Class Roy H. Markham (MCSN: 301445), United States Marine Corps, for gallantry in action in the Southwest Pacific Area on 3 January 1942. When a command post of the 60th Coast Artillery (Anti-aircraft) suffered a direct hit during an enemy air attack on Corregidor, Philippine Islands, Private Markham, Fourth United States Marines, voluntarily ran to the scene of destruction to aid in the rescue of survivors. He proceeded to a nearby culvert where, despite the continuing relentless enemy attack, he worked with two companions for more than an hour and removed and sent to a hospital three men who had been buried by the exploding bombs. Through his gallant action at the risk of his life, Private Markham reflected great credit upon himself and the United States Marine Corps.
