The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to First Lieutenant Raymond J. Marion (MCSN: 0-18146), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to Company F, Second Battalion, Second Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Tinian, Mariana Islands, 29 July 1944. When his platoon was pinned down by heavy machine-gun and rifle fire, First Lieutenant Marion braved the enemy fire to advance through his lines in order to reach the tanks. Remaining with the tanks despite hostile machine-gun, rifle and mortar fire, he directed them to the enemy positions, thereby contributing materially to the successful seizure of the objective. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon First Lieutenant Marion and the United States Naval Service.
