The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Leo W. Manske (MCSN: 416538), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 1 July 1944. When supporting tanks were called forward to assist two of our assault platoons suddenly pinned down by merciless, concentrated fire issuing from well-concealed Japanese-held caves, Corporal Manske voluntarily left his place of safety and, completely disregarding his own safety, unhesitatingly ran forward to guide the tanks to the enemy machine-gun nests. Despite fierce, relentless fire from hostile rifles and machine guns, he coolly led that tanks into combat positions, pointing out targets and directing fire which destroyed Japanese enemy emplacements until he fell, mortally wounded. By his unflagging, zealous efforts and outstanding courage in the face of grave peril, Corporal Manske contributed essentially to the success of our operations in a vital area, and his unwavering devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
