The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Daniel E. Mannix, Jr. (MCSN: 320821), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Leader of an Assault Squad of Company C, First Battalion, Twenty-seventh Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, 19 February 1945. When enemy fortifications held up his company’s advance and prevented the seizure of Motoyama Airfield Number One, Sergeant Mannix voluntarily guided tanks beyond the advance of the company. Directing the tanks despite fierce hostile fire, he was instrumental in bringing about the destruction of the main resistance. Although wounded in the leg during this action, he continued his hazardous task until ordered to be evacuated. His indomitable spirit, courage and determined devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
